1. Write your goal down. The act of writing it reinforces the goals in your mind.
2. Align your goals. Your goals should complement or support each other. When you write your list of goals, take a moment to think how pursuing each one could impact the others.
3. Set Performance goals to reach your Outcome goals. Performance goals are a commitment to yourself to do something and do it consistently until you reach your vision. For instance one needs to make 20-40 calls a week to encourage partners in their support if a particular Outcome goal (amount in figures) is to be reached. Attendance (in church for instance) is an outcome goal but connecting and calling folks will be the Performance goals.
4. Embrace failure. To overcome the fear of making a mistake, many do not set goals. Do not be afraid of mistakes or failure. Every mistake contains valuable lessons in helping you achieve your goals more efficiently and effectively than if you were able to do everything perfectly the first time. By embracing failure, you open yourself to a whole world of "what if I tried this" thinking. "I can't do that" becomes "how could I do that?" And you become more creative! Failure helps you to adapt, correct course and persevere. Those three things alone will help develop your goal achieving abilities.
5. Stop Snowballing. When moving towards your goal and you backslide, don't throw in the towel and waste precious time. Stop it as soon as it starts and get back on track.
6. Create "if-then" plans. Sometimes you achieve your goals sooner than you anticipated and at other times, the goal is not what you wanted. Having "if-then" plans allows you to account for the unknown while still holding yourself accountable to your performance. By establishing criteria that you must meet or circumstances that need to come to pass, you create branches in your goal pathway that allow you and the goal to be more flexible and resilient in the face of the unknown. This flexibility is what keeps you from throwing in the towel when things don't turn out how you anticipated.
7. Make Goal Setting and Achieving a Way of Life. Setting and achieving goals is not what you do from time to time. It's a mind-set. It's a way of living your life. It's something that pushes you to be your best self. It is in making it your way of life that makes all these secrets work for you.
